Biological threats—such as Covid-19 and bioweapons—like bacillus anthracis (anthrax), one of the most serious threats facing the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security—can result in significant loss of life and worldwide destabilization. The threat of bioterrorism means that public water supplies and imported foods need to be monitored regularly for pathogenic contamination.  

The rapid detection and identification of pathogens continuously is critical for the success of detect-to-protect operations, but current pathogen detection and identification technologies cannot meet this need and put civilians and military personnel at risk.
